Weed in America

As a Canadian tourist, I had been curious and a little envious of the recent legalization of Mary-Jane in the states.   I had explored Amsterdam, smoked a spliff and biked the streets. I wondered if the American system was distributing like the notorious city, and how similar would the capitalist’s product of pot be.

The process was an easy google search and soon we were behind the velvet ropes waiting to get into the barren store. The security guard checked our passports before we walked though and spoke about sativas and indicas with the extremely happy storeowner behind the desk.

Everything was packaged, you certainly don’t have the cashier rolling you a joint like they do over seas, but the experience was uplifting and educational. The walls were empty, the only thing displayed were the products- nothing advertised or no blunt disposing napkin holder mechanisms.

Like most things, the overall goal is to make money. Although the government makes an hearty income, there are strict rules that most merchants and growers are proud to follow. So far, the government had been enriched by the totally awesome sweet Alabama liquid snake, and able to disperse millions back into the state.

The legalization has stunted the Mexican cartel, and overall, the black market.

“Buying from us is a safe way to try the product, and to learn about it.”

It was explained that the edibles were placed in simple black packaging, hoping that the ensemble wouldn’t attract the wrong crowd.

“Fathers come in here with their son when they turn the legal age, they ask for photos together, with their receipt, everything,” the owner continued, “people want to celebrate with our product, instead of beer,”

Blunts sold across the Washington State are great, and they have a nice range of intensity. Along with a couple of blunts, we bought a tin of Zoots (pictured, bottom right) and a bag of chocolate chip cookies (pictured, bottom left).

The Chocolate Chip cookies were a bit of a let down. After a long day of traveling, we had made it to Astoria, OR. I laid on the bed, and ate a cookie. I slightly felt light for a moment, and then it quickly disappeared. For the rest of the trip, the $50.00 bag of cookies let us down supremely. Tasted great though!

The Zoots were great with a cup of coffee, and they kept us energized for what the day had in store for us. They were stronger than the cookies, and didn’t give you an overwhelming high at all.

All in all, if like you to get high at the end of the day- buy some blunts. Otherwise you are wasting your time. However, if you are new to it, and would like to find relief through pot, try the cookies or Zoots at first, ease your way into the warm pool of your mind.
